"Is it still the Future?" is the astounding debut EP
from Irish producer, re-mixer, programmer and DJ, Tóirse. Tóirse has
been releasing material and playing live for two years under his
Booger moniker, as well as working on various projects alongside
reputable musicians such as Decal, Daniel Figgis and Max Tundra.
There had to come a time in Ireland when the
intelligent and interesting sensibilities of electronica were met
with the drive, energy and vigour of dancefloor production; where
the things you love about both are wholly present, without a hint of
that which made you bored of either. This is the essence of Is it
still the Future? Booger achieves a fresh vitality in his work that
somehow creates a new idiom, breaking rules without loosing site of
the enjoyment and innovation that should define electronic
music.
When a talented, young multi-instrumentalist, who has
been writing music for many years and held various DJ residencies
across the country, cites Green Velvet, Burning Spear and Sonic
Youth as his favourite acts, it's no surprise that he has such an
incredible grasp of flawless production techniques and wonderful
song writing, nor that he really knows how to keep peoples hips
wigglin'.
From the tough UR-esque tendencies of "Is It Still
the Future?", to the skewed, distorted singing on "Here Come..." the
intricate, skippy beats and beautifully weaving mandolin melody on
Painting of an Ugly Lady, or the two endless loops/locked grooves at
the end of each side to facilitate DJs, Booger proves without doubt
that this is the new monolith of electronic music. Welcome to the
future. |
